Good Manners at Golf Courses -- Everything You Should Know About
Golf is an extremely popular sport enjoyed by men, women and children of all ages. There are countless golf clubs and golf courses around the world for golfers to enjoy. While every individual course and organization is going to have its own set of rules for golfers to follow, it's good to understand basic etiquette relating to the sport. Let's first discuss something that not only relates to golfing, but to life in general -- being on time.
Punctuality is important in the sport of golf. It's a good idea to arrive at least thirty minutes prior to tee time. You might be asked to sign in upon arrival at some courses. While you're waiting, you can prepare your equipment and get some practice. Believe it or not, it's a good idea to warm up before golfing and the time you spend waiting can be a perfect opportunity to do so. Being on time is a matter of politeness that not only affects you, but the people you are golfing with as well as those behind you.
Another issue for golfers is clothing. You will find that clubs, organizations and courses have dress codes that specify what you can and cannot wear. Denim is prohibited most everywhere, as are shorts that are too short in length. Some courses don't even allow shorts. Shirts are almost always going to need to be collared, although there are more lenient courses that allow shirts without collars. You will find there is plenty of golf apparel to choose from, so there's no reason why you cannot dress appropriately when golfing.
Then there's the issue of noise. Most people desire silence when taking their turn on the golf course. This means you should not talk if at all possible. One of the most aggravating things a golfer can do is use a cell phone on the course. If you have a need for your phone on the course, turn the ringer off and turn the phone to vibrate. If a call does come in that you have to answer, step away from the area where others are playing so that your conversation does not distract or disturb them.
Basic good manners are something that are important not only on golf courses but in many other places as well. For example, many of the rules listed above would also apply to a fine restaurant. Golf is considered a more formal sport and is one that many take very seriously. By adhering to the rules of the course as well as the etiquette of civilized society, you can enhance your enjoyment of the game and show respect for others.
